Week 12

Today I will be narrating the problem titled 'penny piles'. We worked on it in class early in the term and I gained some knowledge on this problem in class. I am now going to try and go through the necessary steps to solve this problem. The problem briefly states, "You must use the combinations to to see if they're any numbers that have a range that is impossible to reach and to try using a different starting point instead of 64 pennies in the left drawer.

First you must understand the problem
We know the operations of the Left and Right side now we need to try out different situations using these combos. For example if we start with 64 in the left we now need to transfer half of the pennies to the right to make 32 on each side. Then you follow the right side condition and transfer half of the right to the left to give the left 48 and right 16. You can keep on doing this as long as the number in the drawers match the stipulation.

Devising a plan to tackle the problem
Like I did above to solve this problem you need to do multiple examples, however you need to make sure in certain problem you make sure your answer or functions is true for every possibility. A key thing to remember is that if you do think you solved the problem to pick a random number in this case to see if it is true. I personally have made this mistake trying to find patterns, but by doing this you set yourself up for mistakes. Also when devising a plan its best to work in partner because when you think you have the answer your partners can be there to challenge it to see if it is truly correct. I really was not able to figure out a way to answer this question. Even though I had ideas my partner challenged it a my answer proved to be incorrect.

Carrying out a plan and working through concepts
Once you have a plan you test it and see if it is correct. I was able to get this far in the answering process however I was not able to solve the problem.

If any can help me solve this problem I would really appreciate it because it is really troubling me because I feel that I am so close.

When it comes to others SLOGs I liked how aleccool21.blogspot.ca set up his blogs. I especially liked what how he expressed what we learnt in the weeks and I even used how he set up some of his SLOGs to improve my own.

It has been fun speaking to you all THIS IS LAMAR FOYLE FOR THE FINAL TIME FOR CSC165 SIGNING OUT. GOOD LUCK ON THE EXAMS!

Week 11

The Good

I would say the good of this week is that I have started assignment 3 with some success. My answers for number 1 and 2 were correct. I would explain how I solved it, but I think I would get in trouble for that. For the tutorial I once again understood what was going on in the exercise, but I was not able to answer it fully. Maybe I got perfect but I am pretty sure I will receive an 1/2. Once again I know were I need to improve.

The Bad

During the lectures I was really frustrated I did not understand what was being taught. Well I shouldn't say everything I really did not understand the parts about solving the functions. It really caught me by surprise and I took notes but did not understand what I was writing.

Conclusion

I plan on asking my partner about the function questions because if I don't know this I would not be able to solve question 5 on the assignment. I am happy that I have started the assignment earlier than I would normally start it. It also a added bonus that I understand how to answer the first two questions by myself, it show progress. Overall I really need to look more into solving the function problem and to do that I plan on just simply asking for Help.

We are coming to a conclusion of SLOGs by Lamar Foyle. Next week I will be solving a problem and also expressing what I like and do not like in other peers SLOGs. Keep on reading THIS IS LAMAR FOYLE SIGNING OUT!

Week 9-10

The Good

Week 9 was the term test. I was able to get question one correct, however I  couldn't solve the proof so what I did was write the proof structure which gave me part marks. For question 3 I had no clue what to do. After the test I asked my tutor how to solve the question and I was shocked on how easy it was to answer. The good thing I could say about the test is that it showed me what I need to work on which is writing the proofs themselves. In week 10 we began learning more on big 0. I found it quite easy to understand. During my tutorial I was working it out and felt confident about going into the quiz. I was upset at the fact that we did have a break before the quiz because I was planning to use that time to look over the exercise more. I got 1/2 on it because I once again did not know fully how to solve the proof. I feel that if I was given that 10 minute break I would have allowed me to ask more questions and understand how to solve the questions. The good thing was that I still understand I just need to practice more.

The Bad

The only bad thing I would say is that I didn't do to well on the midterm.

Conclusion

These two weeks have been good overall. For me to continue my success I need to just stay on top of the work and for me to improve I need to practice the thing I don't know how to do fully, which is the actual solving of the proof.
